Earlier this year, we launched the Wait, what?! local advocacy campaign - and wow, did it get people talking.
From “Wait, what? Manawatū has more eateries per capita than Wellington?” to “Wait, what? There are glow worm caves in our region?”, the campaign flipped our usual strategy, turning the spotlight inward to reconnect locals with the many diverse experiences in their own backyard.
The campaign was all about growing local pride, sparking curiosity, and building a wave of informed, passionate advocates for our region.
Why is it important to be an advocate for Manawatū? Because no one tells our story better than the people who live here! Tall poppy syndrome has been part of Kiwi culture for a long time, but here in Manawatū, we have so much to be proud of – sometimes, we just need a little reminder.
Why it mattered:
When locals are proud and in-the-know, they become some of our most powerful ambassadors for our region, helping to attract more visitors, residents and investment. It’s a ripple effect that boosts business, strengthens the visitor experience, and reinforces why Manawatū is a place worth celebrating.
Here, we get more time for the things we love, and less time stuck in traffic. With shorter commutes, we can hit the trails, explore stunning walks, attend exciting events, or dive into hobbies that bring us joy. A successful career, an after-work adventure, a catch-up with a mate – and still make it home in time for tea – you really can have it all in our fantastic region!
Thank you for being part of this.
