LAND DIVERSIFICATION INITIATIVE

Supporting sustainable land use and future-focused farming in Manawatū

As part of our work under the Manawatū Regional Food Strategy, CEDA is helping our region’s farmers and landowners unlock new opportunities through land diversification -building resilience, supporting sustainability, and enabling long-term growth in our primary sector.

Launched in 2023, the Land Diversification Initiative features two innovative, practical tools:

  • An interactive Crop Suitability Map, using GIS technology to match land and climate data with viable crop options
  • A Land Diversification Report, outlining market conditions and the financial potential of high-value crops

Developed in collaboration with Manawatū District Council, this initiative is the first of its kind in New Zealand - a pioneering step in helping landowners make data-driven decisions about the future of their land.

This initiative is a key part of CEDA’s role in supporting our strategic pillars of Business and Place, enabling sustainable land use, enhancing productivity, and helping Manawatū lead the way in future-focused farming.
