Showcasing a unique-to-New Zealand arts trail to drive nation-wide recognition and support a thriving arts community.
Launched in August 2022, the Coastal Arts Trail is a strategic collaboration between the economic development agencies of Taranaki, Whanganui, and Manawatū. Developed in response to the post-pandemic need to stimulate domestic tourism, the Trail was designed to increase visitation, extend stays, and drive spending across the lower western North Island. Targeting key urban markets like Wellington, Auckland, and Waikato, the Trail diverts travellers off main highways and into our regional centres, showcasing the creative vibrancy of our communities and highlighting the depth and quality of local arts experiences.
As New Zealand’s largest self-drive art-lovers’ tour, the Coastal Arts Trail connects more than 60 galleries, studios, and cultural landmarks into a cohesive regional experience. Beyond tourism, the Trail serves a broader economic development purpose: fostering stronger connections among creatives, lifting the profile of the sector, and positioning our regions as places where culture, lifestyle, and opportunity intersect. By championing creativity as a core strength, we’re not just attracting visitors - we’re building regional pride, supporting local businesses, and enhancing the liveability of our places for talent, investment, and long-term growth.
