Consumer spending in Manawatū has seen strong growth over the year to June 2022, with data from Marketview showing consumer spending to be up 3.4%, compared to 0% growth nationally.

The report shows that total electronic card spending grew 5.7% in the Manawatū region, compared to 4.5% across New Zealand for the June quarter. In the year to June, annual electronic retail spending grew by 3.4% in Manawatū, while nationally there was no change.

The largest sectors for spending in the region for the year ending June 2022 were:

  • Groceries and liquor – $577 million (up 7.8%)
  • Home and recreational retail – $435 million (down 2.5%)
  • Fuel and automotive – $287 million (up 18.9% – highest annual increase)
  • Cafés, restaurants, bars and takeaways – $188 million (down 5.9%)
