Manawatū outperforms Aotearoa in retail spend

Consumer spending in Manawatū has seen strong growth over the year to June 2022, with data from Marketview showing consumer spending to be up 3.4%, compared to 0% growth nationally.

The report shows that total electronic card spending grew 5.7% in the Manawatū region, compared to 4.5% across New Zealand for the June quarter. In the year to June, annual electronic retail spending grew by 3.4% in Manawatū, while nationally there was no change.

The largest sectors for spending in the region for the year ending June 2022 were:

  • Groceries and liquor - $577 million (up 7.8%)
  • Home and recreational retail - $435 million (down 2.5%)
  • Fuel and automotive - $287 million (up 18.9% - highest annual increase)
  • Cafés, restaurants, bars and takeaways - $188 million (down 5.9%)
