Manawatū recognised as central to New Zealand's future infrastructure network

The Government’s 30-year draft National Infrastructure Plan has confirmed what we already know – Manawatū is key to New Zealand’s future.

Of the 17 nationally significant projects identified, an impressive six are located right here in our region – a clear signal of the role we play in driving national resilience and economic growth. These projects include:

  • Upgrades to NZDF facilities, housing, and roads
  • Continued development at Linton Military Camp
  • Completion of the Ohakea Base expansion
  • Vital enhancements to freight connections via the Manawatū Regional Freight Ring Road

“These long-term investments not only support regional growth - they underpin the strategic importance of Te Utanganui – the Central New Zealand’s Distribution Hub,” says Robbie Woods, Te Utanganui’s Programme Director. “They represent the next chapter in building a resilient and future-ready national logistics network.”

These inclusions in the draft Plan reinforce the momentum behind Te Utanganui and our region’s bold vision for a nationally significant freight and logistics hub that boosts productivity, streamlines supply chains, and unlocks private investment opportunities.

A key piece of this vision is the Manawatū Regional Freight Ring Road. As a vital connection in the central New Zealand transport corridor, it will help move freight and people more efficiently and safely, while easing congestion on local roads. Alongside projects like Te Ahu a Turanga and the future Ōtaki to North of Levin Expressway, the ring road strengthens our link to Wellington and beyond – supporting economic growth, resilience, and national defence capability.

“We have the plan. We have the momentum. Now is the time to back this investment and make it happen,” adds Woods.
