When you think of cutting-edge technology and groundbreaking innovation, your mind might drift to bustling metropolises like Auckland or Wellington. However, NovoLabs, a startup from Palmerston North, is proving that world-class innovation thrives in Manawatū . With three awards from the recent New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards, NovoLabs has not only put itself on the map but also solidifies Manawatū as a burgeoning hub of technological excellence.
National recognition at the New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards
For NovoLabs, the triumph at the New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards was as thrilling as it was unexpected. Competing against over 250 companies from across the country, the Palmerston North born tech enterprise secured more awards than any other entrant. “It was really an honour,” says Andy Shilton, founder and driving force behind NovoLabs. This recognition has brought extraordinary attention to the company, particularly from venture capital firms eager to explore their innovative potential.
From university research to a global tech giant
NovoLabs’ story began in an unexpected place - a tertiary course on fluid hydraulics at Massey University, where Andy Shilton, then a professor of Environmental Engineering, was inspired to innovate. His expertise in environmental and pollution control led to the development of a novel approach to water flow, utilising ultraviolet (UV) light in a way that had never been done before. This breakthrough idea was the foundation of what would become NovoLabs.
In 2022, NovoLabs operated out of a small shed behind the University with just a couple of staff. Two years on, the company now boasts a modern facility near the Palmerston North airport, within Te Utanganui – the Central New Zealand Distribution Hub, and has expanded its team to include 8 to 10 staff members. With over 30 UV modules sold into commercial applications and more than 1.5 billion litres of water disinfected since their inception, NovoLabs is transitioning from a startup to a growth company with global ambitions.
“The potential is massive,” Andy explains. “It’s a matter of balancing growth - pushing hard enough to capitalise on opportunities without overextending.” As NovoLabs scales, they envision becoming a major player in the global market, with large export volumes.
Pioneering innovation with an international impact
NovoLabs’ core innovation - an entirely new method of introducing UV light into liquids - has set them apart in a competitive market. While the UV market is worth around $8 billion a year, most companies are building similar products. NovoLabs’ unique approach, however, required them to innovate from the ground up, which, though challenging, has led to significant advantages.
Their technology enables the disinfection of liquids without chemicals or excessive power use, offering a cheaper, more sustainable alternative to existing methods. The impact is far-reaching, with potential applications in agriculture, horticulture, dairy farming, and beyond.
CEDA supports NovoLabs development journey
CEDA's Callaghan Innovation Customer Navigator, Peter Ellingham, has been working closely with Andy since the start of NovoLab's journey. He has assisted the company in navigating government support, securing grants, and accessing tax credits. As Peter puts it, "It is a real privilege to work with Andy and his team as they take their cutting edge technology to the world."
“It’s much more effective to have that human aspect - a sounding board, a coffee meeting - rather than just submitting applications online,” Andy shares. The mentorship and connections offered by CEDA have played a role in helping NovoLabs access the funding and business support resources they needed to grow.
Advice for aspiring innovators
For other startups and innovators in Manawatū, Andy offers sage advice: believe in your idea and be prepared to fight for it. Drawing inspiration from actor Anthony Hopkins, Andy stresses the importance of determination and resilience in the face of challenges. “When people will tell you that it’s too hard, believe, believe, believe. Keep going no matter what,” he advises.
The key to success, Andy believes, lies in surrounding yourself with a strong team. Investors look closely at the people behind the business, and having the right expertise can make all the difference. “You shouldn’t be the smartest person in the room,” Andy says, emphasising the value of collaboration and support.
The future of tech innovation in Manawatū
Looking ahead, Andy is optimistic about the future of tech innovation in Manawatū. He sees the potential for other innovators in the region to follow in their footsteps, challenging the notion that success requires relocation to larger cities or overseas markets.
“We’ve got everything we need here,” Andy asserts. “The only thing we’re missing is confidence.” By believing in their ideas and leveraging the resources available in Manawatū, other startups can achieve remarkable success.
As NovoLabs continues to grow, their story is a testament to the power of regional innovation and the crucial role that organisations like CEDA play in fostering that growth.
