In 2020, we set out with a bold vision: to create a high-performing, intermodal freight and distribution hub that could anchor the future of New Zealand’s logistics network.
Today, that vision is a reality.
Te Utanganui – the Central New Zealand Distribution Hub – is now one of three key nodes in the national freight system, standing proudly alongside the Golden Triangle, and Canterbury nodes. With over $8 billion in public and private investment already underway or complete in the current decade, Te Utanganui is reshaping what’s possible for regional-led growth.
Positioned in Manawatū, Te Utanganui is the only place in Aotearoa where road, rail and air freight meet side-by-side, enabling seamless freight flows, national productivity, and enhanced resilience for our regional and national supply chain.
More than infrastructure - it's a cluster in action
From the planned Regional Freight Hub and Palmerston North Airport’s cargo upgrades, to the three key industrial zones that are rapidly expanding and attracting business and large-scale investments including Foodstuffs, Woolworths and ADA NZ – Te Utanganui is a thriving, future-focused ecosystem. It’s a model of coordinated development, collaborative leadership, and market confidence.
And this is just the beginning.
Te Utanganui is already home to more than 80 businesses, and is delivering real impact at a regional and national level, including:
Unlocking freight efficiency and export pathways
Supporting job creation and high-value innovation
Driving a shift toward low-emissions freight movement
Strengthening regional capability and national resilience
