In late June, the Government announced a loan of up to $22.4 million to progress the next stage of the KiwiRail Regional Freight Hub, a key part of Te Utanganui – The Central New Zealand Distribution Hub. The funding is in two stages with $1.9 million in an initial preconstruction phase, with the remainder being released subject to a successful outcome of that work.
It's a significant milestone for our region, but what does it actually mean?
Turning a long-term vision into reality
Through years of collaboration, CEDA has been working alongside local councils, Iwi, KiwiRail and industry partners to bring Te Utanganui to life.
This latest funding enables the next phase of planning, design and business case development for the first stage of the Regional Freight Hub. While construction is still some time away, this investment provides the confidence and momentum needed to move the project forward.
Why does this matter?
At its core, Te Utanganui is about creating a smarter, more connected freight and logistics network for New Zealand.
By strengthening connections between road, rail, air and our port partners, the project will improve how goods move around the country while making supply chains more resilient and efficient.
For Manawatū, it also means creating the conditions for long-term economic growth.
As transport infrastructure develops alongside industrial land, businesses gain greater confidence to invest, expand and establish operations here. That translates into more jobs, more private investment and new opportunities across logistics, manufacturing, warehousing and other high-value industries.
Over time, Te Utanganui is expected to unlock up to $1.5 billion in private investment, supporting thousands of jobs as the precinct develops.
