Manawatū is One of New Zealand's Leading Agrifood Hubs

From pioneering new technologies and food products to strengthening animal welfare, productivity and sustainability, Manawatū is not simply responding to the future of agrifood, it's helping shape it.

A new Agrifood Sector Profile, developed jointly by Palmerston North City Council (PNCC), Manawatū District Council (MDC) and CEDA, showcases the scale, strength and future potential of one of New Zealand's most significant food and fibre regions. The profile highlights why Manawatū continues to be a hub for innovation, research, production and distribution, where ideas become innovations, innovations become products, and products reach the world.

PNCC City Economist, Stacey Andrews, who presented the Agrifood Sector Profile at the Ho Chi Minh City Friendship Dialogue Conference last month, believes Manawatū is home to one of New Zealand’s most complete and connected agrifood ecosystems.

“Nationally significant primary production and processing capability, a mature concentration of research, science, technology and education assets, and a comprehensive logistics and distribution network sit side by side within a compact geography.

“Together, these strengths create an integrated paddock to plate system that supports jobs, exports, innovation and long-term regional resilience.”

The profile highlights the significant contribution agrifood makes to the region, generating $596 million in GDP, supporting 4,894 jobs, and contributing an estimated $835 million in agricultural exports. Together, these strengths position Manawatū as one of New Zealand's leading agrifood hubs and a key driver of future regional growth.

The Agrifood Sector Profile tells our regional story, bringing together up to date statistics and data alongside opinions and perspectives from a range of key industry players. Nikki Middleditch, General Manager of Food Pilot, believes what makes Manawatū special is the diversity of people and expertise we have in one place.

"The more we connect, learn from one another, and work together, the greater our ability to turn good ideas into real outcomes that benefit the region and help shape the future of New Zealand’s food and fibre sector.

“Continuing to support businesses to access the expertise, partnerships and investment they need to innovate will be key to unlocking even more value-added food products for the region.”
