Central Demolition is a successful Manawatū based demolition company founded in 2002 by Ian Butcher. Priding itself on being at the forefront of both the commercial and residential demolition industry, Central Demolition provides a total solution for all demolition requirements, busy pulling down buildings, removing dangerous asbestos and planning safe deconstructions.

In the last five years Central Demolition has seen exponential growth and success expanding their personnel, machinery and capabilities, and now in 2022 have expanded their business from Manawatū to service the whole of the North Island. As a successful business should, Central Demolition have continuously evolved to ensure they continue to succeed, grow and be kind to the environment.

To achieve their commitment to using best environmental practices, staff at Central Demolition set out to stop concrete removed from demolished buildings ending up in landfills. To avoid this wasteful practice Central Demolition conceptualised a solution where clean concrete extracted from demolition projects is crushed and reused for roads and pathways.

Central Demolition pitched this concept to both the Palmerston North City and Manawatū District Councils, and a plan was formed to implement the practice, resulting in Central Demolition forming Central Environmental.

Central Environmental moved to a plot of land on Kawakawa Road in Feilding as the destination site for future concrete crushing projects. Central Environmental was also granted funds from the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund with the goal of reducing waste going to landfill. Central Environmental utilised this to purchase specialised equipment required to bring the Kawakawa Road site to life and start production. Concrete was brought in by various projects and other local companies, processed, and then sent out to be used on roads and other projects.

The 83,000 tons of recycled concrete otherwise dumped in a landfill is now recycled for other purposes. The concept of reusing concrete is mutually beneficial as Central Environmental can sell back the aggregate while still being environmentally smart, proving that environmental solutions are possible while operating a successful business. The program has been so successful that Central Demolition for more people to supply them with waste concrete.

Central Environmental and Central Demolition plan to continue to grow into the future, with many innovative ideas in the pipeline including altering jib board to create high quality fertiliser, developing a wood recycling system and finding solutions to recycle or cleanly dispose of treated timber and asbestos.

Central Demolition have proven that business practices can be just as successful when there is a focus on the environment. The success from this specialist business comes from a true and firm commitment to provide a quality, innovative and professional service for all its operations.
