The Bed Barn's commitment to local sleep solutions in Manawatū

Since its founding in 1988, The Bed Barn has been a cornerstone of the Manawatū business community. A proudly local operation, the company continues to craft high-quality beds and mattresses in Palmerston North, prioritising comfort and community over mass production.

The power of local craftsmanship

Originally established by a local entrepreneur, The Bed Barn has maintained its manufacturing base in Palmerston North for over three decades. While many in the industry shifted to importing, The Bed Barn stayed true to its roots, focusing on nurturing local customers and delivering handmade products.

Andrei Ogrean and his wife, Rose, took over the business 2.5 years ago, drawn by the reputation of its products and commitment to the local economy. "We were researching for a good mattress and kept hearing about The Bed Barn," Andrei recalls. "When the previous owner decided to sell, we jumped at the opportunity."

Building on Bed Barn's success

Bed Barn experienced steady growth until Andrei and Rose took the reins. Eager to infuse fresh perspectives and continue the company’s upward trajectory, one of their first major decisions was to consolidate retail and manufacturing operations under one roof at 667 Tremaine Avenue. This move streamlined operations and strengthened their focus on providing a personalised customer experience.

Another key step in their evolution was the formation of an advisory board, composed of respected local business leaders. "These mentors are champions of our product and help us set the right direction for the business," Andrei says. Recognition, such as receiving a Highly Commended at the 2024 Yorb Business Awards in 2024, has further validated their efforts.

Business is a team effort

The Bed Barn prides itself on using local suppliers wherever possible. The wooden drawers in their bed bases, for instance, are crafted by Tweakit Joinery that Andrei connected with through the Palmerston North chapter for BNI, a national network for business networking.

One of the company’s greatest strengths lies in its dedicated and highly skilled team. Many staff members have been with The Bed Barn for decades—Chris for 36 years, Sami for 22 years, Colin for 14 years, and Angie for 5 years. "Our team’s experience and work ethic allow us to maintain the highest quality while meeting demand," Andrei says. "We truly are a family, and that’s reflected in the care we put into every bed."

New stores on the horizon

Currently, 80% of The Bed Barn’s sales are within the Manawatū region, with the rest coming from referrals across New Zealand. As they consider expanding to nearby towns like Whanganui and Levin, Andrei remains firm that all manufacturing will stay in Palmerston North.

"Being based here allows us to uphold our quality standards and offer a one-year comfort trial—a promise that makes a real difference to our customers," he explains.

As the business grows, The Bed Barn is committed to bringing on young talent and training the next generation of bed makers. "We see this business as part of our family’s future," Andrei shares. With plans for new stores and an online buying option to streamline customer experience, The Bed Barn is poised for sustainable growth while staying true to its local roots.

Community is at the heart of success

For Andrei, Manawatū’s supportive business environment has been instrumental. "The community here genuinely values locally made products," he says. "It’s a place where businesses uplift each other, and that’s part of the magic of Manawatū."
